Culture & Etiquette
Afghanistan is a deeply traditional, family-oriented society with a history of hospitality. Respecting local norms is essential for a safe and positive experience.
Dress Code (Mandatory)
For Women
Modesty is strictly required in public. Women must wear loose-fitting, non-transparent clothing that covers the arms and legs. A headscarf (hijab) covering the hair is mandatory in all public spaces.
For Men
Shorts and sleeveless shirts are not socially acceptable. Many visitors find the local perahan tunban (loose tunic and trousers) to be the most comfortable and respectful choice.

Cultural Respect Notes
- Greetings: Handshakes are common among men. Men should avoid initiating physical contact with women.
- Right Hand: Always use your right hand for eating, passing money, or handing objects to others.
- Hospitality: If offered tea, it is polite to accept. Hospitality (Melmastia) is a fundamental Afghan value.

Note: In some regions, photographing "living things" is restricted by local authorities.
