Visas & Entry Requirements
Navigating the visa process for Afghanistan is complex and subject to unannounced changes. There is currently no option for a visa-on-arrival for most foreign nationals.
The Visa Process
1. Application Location
Visas must typically be applied for in person at an Afghan Embassy or Consulate. Common processing locations for travelers include Islamabad (Pakistan), Dubai/Abu Dhabi (UAE), and Istanbul (Turkey).
2. Requirements
- Passport with at least 6 months validity beyond the date of entry.
- Completed visa application form and passport-sized photos.
- Letter of Invitation (LOI): This is usually required from a licensed Afghan tour operator or a host organization.
- Visa fee (Variable depending on nationality and processing speed).
Provincial Travel Permits
Upon arrival in Afghanistan, foreign visitors must register with the Ministry of Information and Culture (Tourist Office) in Kabul. This office issues specific permits required to travel between different provinces. You will be asked for these permits at checkpoints.
Border Realities
Air Travel: Kabul International Airport is the primary entry hub. Domestic flights to Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif are available but subject to change.
Land Borders: Land crossings with Pakistan (Torkham, Chaman), Iran (Islam Qala), and Uzbekistan (Hairatan) are subject to sudden closures due to bilateral tensions.
Special Note for Dual Nationals
If you hold an Afghan passport or are of Afghan descent, your status and the consular assistance available to you may differ significantly. Research these nuances thoroughly via official government advisory sites.
